VNL - Russell Street School

 24/1/13
e-portfolios

Yesterday I spent time searching the web for schools that are using e-portfolios successfully.  One that caught my eye was Russell Street School in Palmerston North.  I listened to a webinar that was  placed on VNL http://www.vln.school.nz/groupcms/view/187012/webinar-recordings in 2012,  and was most impressed with the way this school has implemented and is using e-portfolios school-wide.

Last year I began investigating  the purpose for creating e-portfolios and tools that support each process, what is the WPS technology infrastructure and how each tool matches the support resources available.  This year I would like to continue along this journey as it is a mammoth undertaking, but one that seems to be very worthwhile for our learners.

Term 4 2012

Sharon and I have been working together on setting up e-portfolios as part of our inquiry into practice.  In the holidays Sharon set up a blogspot for the Year 5 students in our class.  They will familiarize themselves with it over the term and then next year become the experts in teaching the new Year 5 students that come into our room.  The purpose for setting this up is because we want the students to record their learning journey and share it with their family, peers and teacher/s.

The portfolios that we are currently using are foolscap folders with many work samples, assessments, reflections in all curriculum areas.  The problem is that it is not reflective of the ongoing weekly learning that the students are involved in.  We want this to come "alive" for those viewing the students blogspot using videos, photos, voice recordings, pictures, slideshows to name a few.

Many of the students in the class are ICT savvy anyway, so we do not think that it will be difficult for them to incorporate the use of e-portfolios on a regular basis.  This term is going to be very exciting.
It has been very motivating looking at other schools blogspots and seeing what is possible.
